Accountability

This year has been a series of ups and downs, much like any other but different in that I have learned a valuable lesson in it all.

Accountability. I am accountable for my own happiness. No situation, nor circumstance defines me. No person, nor friend, determines my outlook on life. It is up to me to decide whether I will face each day with a smile or if I will wave my white flag in surrender to whatever challenge I encounter.

Looking back at 2013, I see that I spent a lot of time worrying and feeling as if my progress was not enough compared to what others were doing. I neglected the accomplishments and progress I had made. I let fear hold me back from taking risks and moving forward. I allowed self-doubt to stop me from trying.

I will not be a slave to negative thinking.
I will not convince myself that I am not good enough. That is not my truth. That is not the person God created me to be and I must live accordingly.

In the new year I am determined to move forward. I will live life to the fullest no matter what comes my way. God equipped me fully to take on any challenge. My faith in Him needs to strengthen. I will trust in him fully.

I want to courageously hold myself accountable for my own happiness. I will.

The new year is full of promise and that is something I do not want to lose sight of as the weeks and months progress. I have faith in myself, and I will do my best to not lose focus of the things that are truly important in life. Serving The Lord, my family, my friends and doing my part to leave a legacy for myself that 50 years from now I will be proud to look back upon.

The theme for my 2014 is accountability. No resolutions, just faith and accountability.

Sunday Social ~~~ New Year's Eve

Linking up with the Sunday Social ~~~~ This week's questions are all about the new year!

1. What is the best New Years Eve you've ever had?
I feel like I'm always feeling melancholy around New Year's Eve... I've went to house parties, concerts, church and sometimes just chilled in the house on NYE, but unfortunately I can't think of a "best" New Year's Eve I have ever had. I don't feel melancholy this year, so maybe things will pan out and I can use this year as my best :)

2. Are you doing anything for NYE this year and if so what?
So far I have nothing planned. I don't really want to pay outrageous prices to go to any of the clubs in the city to celebrate, but I do want to get dressed up. Maybe dinner & then church? Still deciding..............

3. Name a book we should all read come January?
The Alchemist-- this book is a must read and the perfect book to get you started towards the journey into 2014.

4. What are your new year's resolutions?

Stop being so fearful of change, stay positive and have more faith in God & save more money by not eating out everyday & overindulging at happy hour.

Next week's questions

These are all more questions about the new year!

1. Do you plan to change any of your eating habits in the new year?
2. Any workout tips to get us back in shape after the holidays?
3. What is your favorite thing you did over the holidays?
4. What is something you hope that you accomplish in 2014 that you did not in 2013?
5. Name 3 things happening this year you are excited about and why.

Have a great day, y'all!

Christmas Re-Cap

Thankfully I am off work for the remainder of the week, and can indulge in some after Christmas holiday sales and discounts.

I had a wonderful Christmas Eve, and Christmas day spending time with my family and delighting in the gifts that Santa Clause left me behind :)

On Christmas Eve, I spent the day resting and reading. Then that evening I went to pick up my girlfriend from the airport. She flew in from Atlanta for the holidays, and I wanted to make sure we got to spend some time together before she got busy with her family so I volunteered to pick her up. We stopped by Ambrosia for tapas and dinner & to giggle and catch up before I dropped her off at her parents house.

That night, I did the unthinkable.... I started watching Season One of Scandal on Netflix...It was around 3 am when I finished the entire season. The verdict is still out on whether I will become an obsessed fan or not. Hopefully season two will make me a gladiator. Outside of her cute outfits and flair~ I still wasn't sold. It's a decent show so far though. But I digress.

I woke up at the crack of dawn to an army of Merry Christmas text messages. We usually go to Louisiana for Christmas, but we stayed in Texas this year and everyone gathered at my parents house for lunch and present opening...

This year I surprised my parents with tablets for Christmas. Mind you, my daddy is 80 years old and never in his life before had anything remotely close to that much technology. He was like a little kid getting their first bike, and absolutely fell in love with it & already sent his first email and is thinking of making a Facebook account. I fear I have created a monster, but I'm so happy I was able to do that for them this year.

My mom, sister, aunt, cousins and I spent the majority of the day eating entirely too much, gossiping and just enjoying each others company. It was an extremely pleasant day & I enjoyed every minute of our time together.

I truly enjoy peaceful moments with the ones I love most, and Christmas was a good time indeed. It really is the little things that are most often over-looked that mean the most....

My celebration with the family was way more low-key that the holiday celebration my friends and I had last weekend... I'm still recovering from it & having to remind myself that I am no longer 22 years old....

There are only five days left in 2013, and I plan to spend my remaining time this year in preparation and prayer for 2014. I still haven't made plans for New Year's Eve, but I do plan to spend some of my time off thinking of goals and promises for the upcoming year. I hope everyone is having a safe and blessed holiday with the ones they love the most....

My Year in Books~~~~

I have always been an avid reader, even during my early years reading The Babysitter's Club and Goosebumps series...some of my best memories as a child and during my teenage years was going to the library every other week and checking out dozens of books to read. Like most, as responsibility and life took over, I found less time to read for fun since I had so much required reading in college & law school.

Well, back in 2010 one of my favorite Christmas gifts was a Nook, since it got me back interested in reading for fun and gave me a way to look like I was doing work so I could read in court... whoops.

I started reading whenever I had a spare moment and even tried out a few book clubs..although none of them worked out. I really wanted to be able to discuss some of the books I read with other people so a friend and I decided to start our own book club earlier this year-Les Lecteurs and the rest was reading history!

I downloaded the GoodReads app and began tracking the books I read on there, and just discovered I successfully completely my reading challenge of 25 books this year.... I was delightfully and nerdily excited.

I read a lot of great books this year, some of which could be considered some of my favorites. I read a wide variety, from teen literature, to new authors, mystery to romance but I can say of all the books there was only one that I didn't enjoy and refused to finish.

My top five are listed below, but if you are interested in my complete list just ask or add me as a friend on GoodReads ;)

1.) Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn- I loved every minute of this fast paced murder mystery. They're making it into a movie and I cannot wait to see how they portray it on the big screen.

2.) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho- This short yet moving book helps makes sense out of a lot of life's intricacies. I will probably read this one over and over again.

3.) Envy by Sandra Brown- The story was well written and kept me intrigued the whole way through. I love plot twists.

4.) The House Girl by Tara Conklin- I just finished this one recently and I love how the author weaves the story together and takes us between the past and present with each chapter without it getting too confusing.

5.) The adult in me wants to say that my number 5 is To Heaven and Back by Mary C Neal, I love her account of traveling to heaven and back, but the teenager in me wants to say the entire Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I loved to hate all the characters and was completely sucked into this fantasy world of angels, fairies and other worldly magic. I can't wait til the final book in the series comes out because I truly enjoyed reading books 1-5 and cannot wait to get my hands on the other related series of stories about this world.

I'm not quite sure how many books I will challenge myself to read in 2014, but I am looking forward to more Les Lecteurs book club meetings, discovering new artists and using the $50 Barnes & Noble gift card I got for myself with unused debit card rewards points. That was indeed a Merry Christmas present to myself.

Happy Reading everyone :)

Love the One(s) You're With....

This year is quickly coming to an end. Christmas is a little over a week away, and 2014 is right there on the horizon. As I look back over this past year, I can say that there were truly a lot of lessons to be learned. One of the main lessons is to genuinely love and appreciate the people in your life...both family and friends.

It is my personal belief that we are all placed on this Earth to complete a certain God-given assignment. Be it work related, or even just to give a kind word to a stranger to motivate them to create some work...we are all placed here for a reason. While we are here completing those assignments, I think we are also given the gift of the human experience. The ups and downs of life, the pleasure, the grief & everything in between is all set forth for us to go through to gain valuable lessons or to be shaped in some form as to assist us with completing our assignments. Although the true reward will be in heaven, I do think we should enjoy and bask in these lives while we have the chance to. We aren't promised forever, but we should make the best of every moment we get.

With that being said, here's to this past week & weekend....

Wednesday night, I celebrated what I do believe to be the official LAST 30th birthday celebration for at least another year(s)... My remaining friends are all between 26-28, so I have a while. My girlfriend decided she wanted to bring in her 30th with merlot and painting, so we went to Pinot's Palette for a drink/paint party. We had fun trying to keep up with the instructor and enjoying our beverages... After we finished we walked next door to a bar and chatted a bit before I left to get prepped for work the next day....

Work, was work. I had anticipated the remainder of my week to be uneventful, until the unimaginable happened. I had just finished reading my latest book selection, The House Girl by Tara Conklin, which is awesome by the way... when I rolled over to go to bed. Something told me, "check Instagram Fal" so I scrolled through my timeline and saw a post by The Dream congratulating Beyoncé on her new album. I immediately sat up straight in the bed dazed and confused. By that time it was almost 1 am, so I thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me.. but, no. Shock, surprise, bewilderment and amazement....flash forward to about 2:30am and I have completely downloaded all songs and videos on the new CD. The next few days are a blur. I can only remember choreography, fierceness, and memorizing song lyrics. I seriously think every conversation I had the next few days revolved around Beyoncé.

I considered changing my name to Falyonce at one point. No joke. I love Beyoncé. I love how she represented our hometown of Houston so well on this album. I love all of her outfits. I love most of the songs (not all, but the majority) I just. Yeah. I know some people do not like her, or have strong opinions that she is not that great...but I respect her as an artist & performer. And that's all I have to say about that....

Moving along.......

I spent my Friday in the house relaxing, reading and just enjoying me time. I woke up early Saturday morning to get my hair done, then hurried back to meet up with my family to attend a memorial service for one of my mother's good friends. I tried my best to be strong for my mother when I heard about her friend passing away, but I must admit the memories flooded my mind and I had my moment of emotion while at the service. One thing I did find comfort in is knowing that she lived such a full life, and genuinely loved the Lord. I want to have a full life. I want to leave a legacy. I want to be so steadfast in knowing that regardless of how good or bad times get, that my only purpose here is to serve the Lord. She is going to be truly missed, and I can only imagine how it feels to lose a close friend after decades and decades of them being in your life, but my mother is happy that she has gone on to live an eternal life...

Another reason why I am so gung-ho about loving people while they are here. No one is going to be here forever, and I want to have an abundance of memories left to cherish. And now I shall lighten the mood before I start crying with pictures of my lovely family...

After the services were over, we went to eat and run a couple of Christmas shopping related errands. I then napped until it was time for part two of my friends birthday celebration.

It was FREEZING last night, so we braved the cold to have dinner and libations at Straits.

Beyoncé joined us for dinner, as she was the topic of discussion as we streamed her videos at the table. Obviously we talked about other important topics, but I digress.

I woke up just in time for church at Bedside Baptist, and enjoyed service via the internet. I then went to meet up with a new acquaintance I made at an event I went to last week. She and her husband have been living in the United States for a couple of months, after deciding to relocate here from South Africa. We had a lot in common, and had a great time chatting it up over brunch on the patio at Empire Café. It has been a long time since I have made a new acquaintance and actually clicked with them so well. We plan to meet up more in the future.

After my brunch meeting, I did a little shopping and retreated into my pajamas for the remainder of the evening. It's back to business tomorrow. Four days of work, then our office Christmas party, then my week long vacation & Christmas. I am looking forward to resting up the remaining days of the year and working on my game plan as to how I plan to concur 2014.

I want to spend the remainder of the year in prayer for a multitude of things. God has been so good to me this year, and I am looking forward to his grace and mercy in the upcoming season.

Countdown to Christmas in full effect!!!!!

Giving.

A few weeks ago, I got an email from Search Homeless Services listing out various ways to either donate or volunteer with their organization this holiday season. Search is a nonprofit organization in Houston, Texas that provides resources to homeless individuals in the city. I became familiar with this organization when I met a friend back in 2009 who had devoted his time to raising awareness for homelessness. He walked from Houston,Texas to Los Angeles, California! Literally walked. On his own two feet. Walked. I was so moved by what he did that I started researching statistics and lending a hand with various organizations dedicated to providing services to homeless individuals.

Well after reading through that email I sent out a mass email to a lot of my friends to see if they would be interested in doing a project with me to give back this holiday season. A lot of people responded positively and we dediced to STUFF!

We bought holiday stockings and stuffed them with scarves, socks, gloves, and various other toiletries and travel sized items and delivered them to Search to be passed out by mobile outreach volunteers and to individuals enrolled in their programs.

It seems minimal, but it was our hope that just that little bit of thought would warm someone's day and make them feel remembered this season.

My sister liked the idea so much that she got her coworkers together to STUFF as well.

I really encourage everyone to take a moment to think about those less fortunate this holiday season. If you have free time to volunteer or even a few extra dollars to spare to any charity or church or organization. It's the little things that can mean so much more to someone who is less fortunate. Giving not only feels good, it is good and I'm glad we got together to do this project.

On an unrelated note, I want a real camera. Like a fancy, nice one. Present to self possibly?

SSSSSS-U!!!!!

This weekend my alma mater traveled to Houston to play in the SWAC Championship game against Jackson State University. It had been ten long years since we played in and won a championship game & it made it even better that the game was played in my city! The temperature decided to drop below 40, which is Artic for us, so we didn't get much outside time to tailgate and enjoy the festivities aside from the game...but, WE WON and that is all that matters!

It felt so good to see classmates, and be surrounded by thousands of alumni of my alma mater! Next December, it will have been 10 years since I walked across that stage at Southern University and obtained my degree. I made so many memories in undergrad and learned so many valuable lessons about life. I fell in love my first time on the yard, experienced my first heartbreak~ learned all about friendships & hard work, trust, struggle and achievement. I can't say I loved every moment...standing in line for hours to register... not having cable or internet (sounds like first world problems now, but it was a big deal back then, lol) and having to walk miles from my dorm room in the front of campus allllllllllllllll the way to the back of campus for classes...

Some of my best times in life were in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I went to Southern before the days of selective admission...one of the few universities that had open enrollment, so EVERYONE could have the opportunity to enroll into college... which also led to an interesting cast of characters on campus including a large variety of local celebrities and rappers.... INDEED it was an ADVENTURE! These days my alma mater has completely transformed itself, making improvements on campus with the buildings, housing and coming up to speed technology wise.

I am definitely a Proud Alumni of the Southern University and A&M College!!!! Congratulations and Geaux Jags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1918-2013

I was still a high school student when Nelson Mandela came to speak at my alma mater, but his legacy remained on campus. Upon my arrival I was well welcomed into the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, and graduated from my department with a degree in Political Science.

I can only hope to achieve as much as this man in my lifetime. The struggle, the hardship, the perseverance.

Just so much.

His story is one of importance, he should forever be remembered.

And Then, It Was December......

I'd be lying if I said the holidays always left me filled with sunshine, lollipops and rainbows everywhere. I love coming together as a family, but sometimes it is overwhelming.

In the early days, before my cousins and I grew up... before we were tarnished by loss and separation, holidays were split between Texas and Louisiana. The majority of my family still resides in Louisiana, so we would make the trek there for Christmas, and they would journey to Texas for Thanksgiving.

Over the years my mother has struggled to keep that tradition alive, despite a lot of opposition. Not fights, but other options like going to New Orleans for the Bayou Classic or just not being able to make it over. I miss the old days when togetherness meant something. I miss the days when everyone was here, enjoying one another and reminiscing at the good times. Times have changed, and unfortunately not for the better. Sometimes gatherings feel forced. Other times there is so much unspoken grief in the room that you choke on your words, and have literally nothing to say. It's like the stress of the world has torn at you so much throughout the year, that you are bare and ragged by the time the holidays roll around. My vision of family has faded so tremendously that I'm afraid that the term will cease to exist, and we will all end up alone with nothing in our corner. I refuse to accept that sentence, and I may well just be feeling overly dramatic tonight, but I really feel the need to pray for the black family as a whole.

But, I digress. Whoops. Definitely wasn't trying to make this out to be a depressing post. But.... Just had to get that off my chest.

Anyways.......

My good friend from undergrad joined my family and I for Thanksgiving again this year. I'm so thankful that she came over, and I doubt if she even realizes how much her presence meant to me. She kept my sister and I laughing, and helped me avoid having to answer a million questions about where my ex boyfriend was, have I talked to him and had I met anyone new (nope, sorry..still haven't). These are real conversations. A year and a half later of being single and this is still a hot topic convo at times. Was there a time limit of how long I had to get a new man? Because obviously I'm doing something wrong. But back on topic. I'm rambling......

We had a blast hanging out, laughing with my cousin and nephew and just eating & enjoying.

After the day ended, we made our way to Boheme for late night drinks & surprisingly our favorite flat bread pizza. Like we hadn't eaten enough already, hahahaha. They had the heaters blasting and we chatted it up outside and enjoyed the cold.

By the time I made it home, the drunk messages began from my ex boyfriend. Maybe it's easier to tell someone how you're feeling when you're wasted. Although my cousins husband, told me earlier in the day that he has a new girlfriend...why he mentioned that I don't know-- that's another story for another day... Guess his day wasn't as eventful as I had pictured in my head after all.

Moving along.....

I didn't partake in any Black Friday activities. I took off work, so I had plenty of time to go shopping Tuesday and Wednesday. I finished all of my Christmas shopping!! I'm excited about that, and that also means I have more time to focus on some gifts for me.

My Saturday morning was filled with running errands with my mother and sister, then watching my alma mater demolish Grambling at the Bayou Classic in New Orleans.

Later that night, I went out with a friend for drinks. I won't be doing that again.

I think drinks should be designated for good times, not when you are already feeling down.

No good can come from that.

Today has been filled with sleep. I've been off a week, yet I feel completely mentally and physically drained. I'm so excited to get back to the grind and go into the office tomorrow. I miss court. I need to be submerged in the hustle and bustle of everyday life again. It's crazy how I looked forward to being off, and now I can't wait to be busy again.

Being busy keeps my mind off of things. I can't believe it's already December. I don't want to seem like a negative Nancy, but geesh. This year. My goodness. So many good things which I have to give God the glory for, but still so much that I wish I didn't have to deal with.

I've done what I've thought I was supposed to. I hate to seem like I'm complaining because Lord knows I'm blessed beyond measure, but I still can't help but ask when will it be my time? People see the happy posts, and pictures and see me always doing something but don't realize it's because I have to avoid being still. I would much rather be curled up in my pajamas reading a book all day anyday. Then it's those moments when I roll over and I am haunted by everything I had, and everything that I still desire.

I want to apologize for my moment of truth because it sounds so selfish reading it out loud but it is my personal reality.

I'm planning to finish this year strong and have a lot of things planned for this month. So many events this week leading up to my school playing in the SWAC championship game this Saturday, as well as a bunch of holiday parties and birthday celebrations.

I'm looking forward to a busy December and a bright 2014. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving, and is full equipped to end this year strong.
